A Brief History of the Club
In 1961 the Greerton Rugby Football Club was formed due to the growth in the population in the south of Tauranga, including the Greerton, Oropi, Pyes Pa, Tauriko, and Kaimai areas. For the first five years the rugby club concentrated on building up junior rugby strength until 1966 when we fielded our first senior team.
Morland Fox Park was home for the club from 1960 through to 1990. The club moved to its current premises, Greerton Park, the envy of many other sporting clubs, in 1991.
1971 saw the senior rugby side take out the championship for the first time in the clubs' history and repeating the result in 1973. The junior rugby club fielded 22 teams in 1973, which is similar to the number of teams now, highlighting the huge efforts the administrators of the day put in.
Our current name was born out of the amalgamation of the Greerton Rugby Football Club and the JMC rugby from the St Mary's School. We are affiliated to the NZ Marist Federation giving us a national profile where we attend tournaments all over the North Island. Each year a player is selected for the NZ Marist Colts tour.
The club is community focused and its objective is to foster sport in the area. In the winter season there are 3 major sports groups- Senior Rugby & Netball and Junior rugby.
